Smiling woman with straight teethTeeth straightening is carried out using orthodontic treatment. It can be done for aesthetic reasons or to help improve the long term health of teeth and gums by spreading the biting pressure across all teeth.

Many people have teeth that are crooked or overcrowded and orthodontic treatment can be used to help straighten and move teeth into a better position.

Orthodontic treatment is normally carried out in children but now more and more adults are considering improving their smile through orthodontic treatment. There are many different treatment options available, from the traditional metal bracket braces, through to 6 month smiles and Invisalign.

In order to provide orthodontic treatment a dentist must have received additional training and for more complex cases patients should be referred to an orthodontist. Orthodontists are dentists who have completed additional training and study in the art of teeth straightening and are therefore able to give the most detailed help and guidance on treatment plans.

The first step is to have a detailed examination at which point the dentist or orthodontist will fully assess your mouth and determine which if any treatment will provide you with the best possible results. Space may be created by various means including interproximal reduction which is suitable for most cases where mild to moderate crowding is present. In severe cases of crowding, teeth may need to be extracted to create space.
