What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy is required when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth becomes infected. If the pulp becomes infected the infection may spread through the root system and may eventually lead to an abscess. The root canal procedure

During the root canal procedure, a dental drill is used to expose the dental pulp of the tooth. Your dentist then uses small tools to clean out the roots of your teeth and remove the infected pulp. The canal is cleaned, shaped and prepared for filling.

A temporary filling will be placed in the tooth and it will be left to settle for a couple of weeks. Once all the infection has cleared the tooth will be permanently filled. The filling will strengthen the root and help to preserve the tooth. Finally, a dental crown is placed to protect the tooth and avoid reinfection.
